I’m not sure exactly what it was in me that made me make this promise, but, when I first came to know the Lord, I remember being extremely overwhelmed with how precious this (new) life in Christ was. I made this promise to myself, that I was not going to let ANY offense in the church or out of the church keep me away from what God had for me. I didn’t make this promise because of an offense that occurred, I just knew in my heart that it wasn’t realistic to expect people to be perfect, especially people who call themselves Christians. I figured that if I just walked in the same grace that the Lord gave me, then I could easily let the offenses that are sure to come, just roll right off my shoulders…..
Has it been that easy? NOPE…. But I am still here. I am still standing, BY HIS GRACE.
People WILL let you down. It doesn’t matter what church you go to, it doesn’t matter who you know or how “close” you are to someone. We are still imperfect beings. The only one who can claim perfection is Jesus. Know this and be full of Grace, after all we have been called to be Christ like. If your mind is telling you right now; “oh no!, that is so not me” , then please recognize that emotion as something rooted in you that God wants to pull like a prickly weed choking the fruit from your garden. Ask God to soften your heart and make that area of your life new.
I personally find that when I walk in love, I don’t allow people to control my emotions; there is so much freedom in that.
Proverbs 17:9 says: Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.
We humans are a passionate bunch and the moment that the offense happens we are stung, angered and instinctively ready to strike back. Try this: The next time it happens, practice a single deep breath, give yourself a second to slow down your instinct and BE CALM.
Ecclesiastes 10:4 says: If a ruler’s anger rises against you, do not leave your post; calmness can lay great offenses to rest.
